Bay View Association Board of Trustees


The Association By-Laws direct that Bay View be managed by a board of nine trustees and those persons appointed by the board to carry out the day-to-day functions of the Association. Trustees are leaseholding members who are elected to three-year terms at the Association's Annual Meeting. A majority of trustees must be members of the United Methodist Church.

Larry and his wife, Suzanne, purchased their cottage in 1975 and have been very involved in the Bay View community since then. He continues to practice law in Oakland County, with emphasis on real estate, land use and business law. During his 41 years of practice, he was city attorney for the City of Rochester Hills for 28 years. Larry graduated from Western Michigan University and Wayne State Law School. He is a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Rochester, Mich., and served on the board of Methodist Children’s Village. He is also involved in the county bar association and other community organizations. In Bay View, Larry has served on the Long Range Planning Committee, the By-Law Committee and the Buildings and Grounds Committee. He was elected president on Aug. 2, 2009, following the Association's annual meeting.

Glenn, his wife, Betty, and four generations of Stevens family members have had Bay View connections for over 45 years. Currently Glenn is trustee liaison to the Long Range Planning Committee and the Friends of the Bay View Performing Arts, and is a member of the Bay View Choir. For several years he provided administrative support for the weekly worship-lecture series. Glenn earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at Michigan State University. He spent most of his professional career as an academic administrator working with Michigan’s public universities. For nearly 20 years he was the executive director of the President’s Council, State Universities of Michigan, based in Lansing. A long-time and committed volunteer, he has held leadership and service roles in many non-profit organizations, among which include The Salvation Army, Big Brothers, The Marquette Choral Society, The Marquette County Arts Council, The Detroit Compact, The Michigan-Japan Foundation and The Michigan Nonprofit Association.

The Crandell family has owned a cottage since 1968. The children have all attended the Bay View Boys’ and Girls’ Club, and now their children come back to Bay View to attend club. Rose is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has been a teacher, school psychologist, and director of special services, having served in several communities in Michigan; Arlington, Virginia; and Garden City, Long Island, New York. She has been a member and president of the Bay View Library Board, member and president of the Music Committee, member of the Memorial Garden Committee, the Performing Arts Committee and the Altar Guild. Rose currently chairs the Membership Subcommittee and is trustee member of the Recreation Committee and Personnel Subcommittee. Episcopalian.

Barbara Merrell is retired from TIAA-CREF where she was an investment management professional. She and her husband live in Darien, Conn. She currently serves on the board of The Community Fund of Darien and is a former commissioner with the Darien Affordable Housing Advisory Commission. She is a member of the Noroton Presbyterian Church and formerly served on the board of directors of NPC Nursery School. She is a fourth generation cottage owner and a fifth generation visitor to Bay View. She has been a member of both the Bay View Finance Committee, and the Heart of Bay View Capital Campaign, and has participated in various rec programs. She has an MBA from Columbia University and is a former president of Media and Entertainment Analysts of New York. She has worked as a stock analyst, divisional finance manager and manager of a commercial real estate portfolio.

Mary Sue has participated in the Bay View Association for over 50 years. Each of her children has been involved in the recreation program, from attending Tot Lot to assuming leader positions. Her grandchildren continue the tradition. She is a past president of the Bay View Woman’s Council and has served on many Bay View committees. She holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting and business education from Ferris State University and a master’s degree in business education from Michigan State University. Education has been a large part of her life. She taught in the Stockbridge, Mich., public schools, the Detroit High School of Commerce, Ferris State University, and the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. She has taught contract bridge at Bay View for several years. Mary Sue is involved in numerous community activities in Big Rapids, including holding offices in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Michigan at the local, district and state levels. She is a member of the United Methodist Church.

David and Ada Kidd have owned their Drydock Cottage since 1972, and their children and grandchildren have been nurtured here. Dave came to Bay View in the late 1940s.  He graduated from Michigan State University (MSU), served as horticultural extension agent in Maryland for several years, and was then called into ordained ministry. He was campus minister for 10 years and then served churches in Flint, Detroit and Ypsilanti. He retired from the United Methodist Detroit Annual Conference 11 years ago. Ada is also retired from a private psychology practice. Dave founded our Bay View Memorial Garden and he consults with local congregations on similar gardens. He has taught gardening for many years at Bay View, as well as book studies, Elderhostel and master gardening. Both Dave and Ada are frequent speakers on environmental issues and care for an acre of garden at home. They sing in the MSU Choral Union and he is a volunteer guide at the university gardens. Dave is trustee liaison to the Worship and Religious Life, and Operations committees.

Kate has been a Bay View cottage owner for 20 years.  Her four children have grown up in Bay View and were all active in the Boys’ and Girls’ Club as campers and leaders.  Kate has served on the Recreation Committee for the past six years – she will be trustee liaison to the committee this year – and has assisted in the hiring and mentoring of recreation directors. She graduated from Albion College with a Bachelor of Arts and honors from the Phi Beta Kappa Society.  She returned to school and received her certification in Montessori early childhood education. Currently she is the head teacher at a small school in Ann Arbor. Kate is a presenter at the American Montessori Society’s annual conference. She also serves as a consultant to other Montessori schools in the region.  Kate has worked for many years as a volunteer in the Ann Arbor public schools. She served four terms as PTO chairperson, was appointed to the steering and long range planning committees for the new alternative middle school, served on the citizens search committee for Ann Arbor’s  superintendent, as well as several hiring committees for principals and teaching staff for many years. Kate and her husband, Dick, are members of First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor.

Tom is a native of Louisville, Ky., and a long time Bay View resident. He has Bachelor of Arts and law degrees from the University of Michigan and is engaged in private law practice in Grand Rapids, specializing in real estate and commercial law and related litigation. He is a certified construction and commercial law arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. Tom has been active in Grand Rapids First United Methodist Church, serves as chancellor to the bishop of the West Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church, and is a trustee of the Methodist Theological School of Ohio. Tom has been very active in community affairs, having served as president and trustee of the Grand Rapids Board of Education, Metro YMCA, Downtown Rotary Club and its foundation, and the Clark Retirement Community. He is past chairman of the 3rd Congressional District of the Michigan Republican Party. Tom currently serves as a member of the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation and a member of the board of trustees of Albion College. He served as Bay View President from 2002 to 2008. Rob Zetterberg is a former military officer and businessman. He also served in city and county government in Georgia; and has been a Rotarian, and a corporate trainer for the United Way. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Ga. He is married and has been a cottage owner since 2000. Zetterberg has been a Religion and Life Forum moderator and served on the Architectural Review and Buildings and Grounds committees (two years as chairman). He has also worked on Funds for the Future and the Heart of Bay View Capital Campaign. He has been a leader for the Men’s Bible Study, Men’s Retreat and is a member of Campus Club. Zetterberg has an MBA and is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, where he also served on the faculty. He commanded a 7,000 person brigade. After his military career ended he served as president of FASTRANS, a transportation marketing company.


Bishop Jonathan Keaton, ex. officio

Bishop Jonathan D. Keaton was named resident bishop of the Michigan Area of The United Methodist Church effective Sept. 1, 2004. He served the last eight years as resident bishop of the Ohio East Area. Believing divisions among Christians seriously diminish the impact of the church on the world, Keaton will also work for Christian unity. “Like Christ, I wish that we ‘may all be one’ as Christ is one with God,” he said. Keaton was elected to the episcopacy in 1996. Prior to that, he served as a district superintendent in the Northern Illinois Conference. He was a member of the conference staff responsible for monitoring the church’s stand on social issues, providing support and encouragement for ethnic local churches and promoting spiritual formation. Keaton also has served churches in Chicago and Rockford, Ill. He was a teaching assistant at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, where he earned a Master’s of Divinity and Doctorate in sacred theology. Keaton teaches in numerous conference schools of Christian mission. Currently, Bishop Keaton chairs the denomination’s Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century Committee. He also has traveled extensively throughout the international community in support of world missions. In 1967 he received the Outstanding Service Award from Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Ark., where he did his undergraduate work. Also, Garrett Evangelical Seminary presented Bishop Keaton with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. Keaton and his wife, Beverly, have three children: Jonathan II, Tandreka and Anaya. They have one grandchild, Maliah Hope Keaton.
